The
Institute of Museum and Library Services has nurtured hundreds
of digital collections developed by museums and libraries
across the United States through its National Leadership
Grant (NLG) and Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) programs. Now IMLS wants to learn more about how
to best provide integrated access to the content within these
diverse, widespread collections. In 2002, the University of Illinois was awarded a National
Leadership Grant to help the IMLS reach this goal.

Why
should you participate?
NLG and LSTA
projects participating in the IMLS DCC project have the
potential to:
-
Expose their collections to a wider audience through inclusion
in the collection registry and metadata repository.
-
Gain experience with the latest tools for sharing metadata
with other collections.
-
Discover new opportunities for collaboration with other institutions.
Your
project will play an integral part in determining how future
NLG and LSTA projects should develop their collections. You can
help us discover how digital collections can support a
diverse set of end users, as well as those who will build
services around shared metadata.
How
do you participate?
You
can be a valued partner in three areas:
Contribute a collection record. The
collection registry is a database of descriptions of NLG and select LSTA
collections. Learn more.
Contribute
metadata. The metadata repository contains
aggregated metadata that describes the content of NLG collections.
We can provide the tools and support you need to set up
your metadata so that is can be harvested and placed in
the repository. Harvesting utilizes the Open Archives
Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Learn
more.
