Project Team Background:

Carole Palmer - Co-Principal Investigator, 2002-2007, Principal Investigator, 2007- - clpalmer@uiuc.edu

Co-Principal Investigator Carole L. Palmer is associate professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her background is in academic librarianship, and she teaches in the areas of information seeking and use and current trends in collections and information services. Her research examines how well existing information structures and tools support research and problem solving. She specializes in qualitative studies of how people find and use information and the barriers that deter this process. She is currently engaged in projects to develop digital libraries and knowledge discovery systems that support and promote diverse research collaborations. All of her work is aimed at development of information environments that are responsive to the practices of user communities, with a particular focus on improving information systems and services for interdisciplinary inquiry.

Timothy W. Cole - Principal Investigator, 2002-2007, Co-Principal Investigator, 2007- - t-cole3@uiuc.edu

Principal Investigator Timothy W. Cole is the Interim Head of Digital Services & Development, Mathematics Librarian and Professor of Library Administration at UIUC. Cole is a current member of the OAI-ORE Liaison Group and a past member of the OAI-PMH Technical Committee. He is an expert in XML and related technologies such as XSLT, in the use and development of metadata schemas, and in other facets of digital library system design and implementation.

Amy Jackson - Project Coordinator - amyjacks@uiuc.edu

Amy Jackson is the Project Coordinator for the IMLS Digital Collections and Content project at UIUC. Amy was previously the Metadata and Digital Initiatives Librarian at Indiana State University, and has also worked on digital projects at Harvard University. She holds an M.S. in Library and Information Science from Simmons College in Boston and a Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. Her current research interest is metadata harvested through OAI-PMH.

William H. Mischo - Co-Principal Investigator - w-mischo@uiuc.edu

Co-Principal Investigator William H. Mischo is the Engineering Librarian and professor of library administration at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mischo was the PI of the Illinois Digital Library Initiative and D-Lib Test Suite projects and expert in XML, reference linking systems, simultaneous search systems, and end-user interface design for library applications.

Sarah Shreeves - Project Coordinator - 2002-2005, Co-Principal Investigator, 2005- - sshreeve@uiuc.edu

Sarah Shreeves is the Coordinator for the Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship (IDEALS), the institutional repository at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She has been active in the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and Shareable Metadata Best Practices Working Group, a joint initiative between the Digital Library Federation (DLF) and the National Science Digital Library to establish best practices for OAI data provider implementations and metadata interoperability. Sarah’s last position was as the Project Coordinator for the National Leadership Grant funded IMLS Digital Collections and Content Project (DCC) based at the UIUC. Her experience with shareable metadata and the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting is grounded in both the IMLS DCC project and the Mellon funded OAI Metadata Harvesting Project (2001-2002) at UIUC where she worked as a graduate assistant and project coordinator. Prior to coming to UIUC, Sarah worked for nine years in the MIT Libraries in Boston. She has a BA in Medieval Studies from Bryn Mawr College, an M.A. in Children’s Literature from Simmons College, and an M.S. in Library and Information Science from UIUC.

Michael Twidale - Co-Principal Investigator - twidale@uiuc.edu

Co-Principal Investigator Michael Twidale is associate professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research includes the investigation of contextualized systems evaluation and interface design to support collaborative learning and working. Twidale received a NCSA/UIUC Faculty Fellows Program award in support of his work with “Cyberdocents: an exploration of education and guidance in and around museums.

Oksana Zavalina - Research Assistant - zavalina@uiuc.edu

Research Assistant Oksana Zavalina is a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She earned her MLS degree from the UIUC GSLIS in May 2002, and her BA degree in library science from the Culture and Arts University of Ukraine in 1993. Oksana worked in both public and technical services at the academic and research libraries, including the National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine, National University Kyiv Mohyla Academy Library, Yale University Library, UIUC Slavic Library. Oksana's research interests include subject analysis and subject representation of documents in electronic databases.
